How Much TOEFL Do International Students Need? Can Duolingo Replace It?

Do international applicants need English scores? What TOEFL score is enough, whether Duolingo can replace it, and when you can skip it — answered in one read.

What English Scores Do in Your Application

For international students, a TOEFL score (or similar) proves you can follow lectures and do the coursework. It works like a gate, not a bonus. Once you’re past the line, a higher score does little for your odds.

The TOEFL iBT is scored out of 120. Most comprehensive universities set a minimum between 80 and 100, and top schools often recommend more. Scores above 100 are common there. Several University of California campuses also set minimums, generally around 80. Check each school’s site for the exact number.

Here’s a practical way to read the numbers. A school’s ‘minimum’ is the floor to get your file reviewed. Its ‘recommended’ score is closer to what most admitted students actually have. If UIUC is on your list, check whether it sets different bars for different majors. That’s more useful than remembering one number.

Can Duolingo Replace TOEFL?

The Duolingo English Test is cheaper, can be taken at home, and returns results fast, usually within two days. The downside is inconsistent acceptance. Some schools fully accept it, some don’t, and some accept it but want a higher score.

Here’s how to decide:

  1. Open the international English requirements page for every school on your list. Note which tests each one accepts, plus its minimum and recommended scores.
  2. If every school accepts Duolingo, you can take only that. If even one key school doesn’t, take the TOEFL.
  3. To play it safe, don’t gamble on Duolingo if your main target schools ask for TOEFL.

When You Can Skip It, and How to Plan the Timing

Many schools waive English scores for qualifying students. For example, if you’ve attended a US high school for a set number of years, or you studied in English and can get a school letter to prove it. Say your kid has been at a US boarding school since 9th grade. Most target schools would waive the requirement, but a few might still ask for a score. Confirm that early.

For timing, TOEFL scores usually last two years. Aim to take it the first time before spring of 11th grade, which leaves room for one retake in the fall of 12th grade. Register about 4 weeks ahead, since popular test centers fill up fast.

FAQ

How long is a TOEFL score valid?

Usually two years from the test date. If you're applying in 12th grade, make sure your score is still valid on the day you submit. If you tested too early, you'll need to retake it.

I've been in a US high school for years. Do I still need TOEFL?

Many schools waive the English requirement for students who've spent a set number of years at a US or English-medium school. But the required years and what counts differ by school, so check each school's international admissions page.

Does every school accept Duolingo?

No. Acceptance varies. Some schools don't take it, and others require a higher score. Check each target school's English requirements page first, then decide which test to take.

If my TOEFL score is already enough, should I retake it for a higher score?

Once you clear your target schools' bar, extra points add little. Your time is usually better spent on essays and activities.
